RIGATONI

Meet Rigatoni! This handsome German Shepherd puppy is only 5 months old but has a larger than life personality! And when he is all tuckered out from being a busy little puppy, he just wants to crawl into your lap for a snuggle session!

This sweet puppy was born with a range of orthopedic deformities that included shallow hip sockets, malformed femoral heads and a defect in his lumbar spine. He underwent acupuncture, hydrotherapy and laser therapy in hopes to give him better mobility. But as he grew we saw that he actually has this mobility thing figured out! In true (read stubborn!) German Shepherd fashion this boy did not allow his disability to get the better of him in any way and has no idea that he is any different! He can even do a couple stairs up and down the deck! He really is just a happy boy that wants to follow his human around all day and chew on sticks. Rigatoni is great with dogs and cats, in fact he loves our sweet old blind dog Selah and is very gentle with her despite being a puppy! While Rigatoni is a total lovebug we think he would do best in a home with older children as he is still a puppy with some puppy manners. Athough he can do a couple stairs, it might be hard for him to go up and down a flight of stairs safely, so a house with a few or no stairs would be the best fit for him.

Currently Rigatoni is figuring his way around a wheelchair which we hope will help increase his mobility and allow him to go on walks like a regular dog! He is current on all vaccines as well as flea and tick preventative and house trained. Rigatoni is set to be neutered and chipped in early July after which he is ready to go to his forever home!

Essie

Essie is a gorgeous Husky, Pittie, German Shepherd (etc!) mix that will steal your heart with just one look! At one year old, she is playful, curious, goofy, and bubbly! Essie is a little ball of energy just waiting to see what life has in store for her.

When she was 10 months old, Essie was hit by a car which resulted in a spinal fracture and subluxation of two vertebrae in her spine. The only option for her to regain use of her hind legs, was emergency spinal surgery at The Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Her spine was stabilized with multiple pins and screws and surgery was a great success! She is once again mobile and was in a rehab program to strengthen her hind legs so she can live her best life! We call her our miracle puppy because she made a full recovery post spinal surgery which is nothing short of amazing!

Essie is house trained, current on vaccines, as well as spayed & microchipped.. She does well with all dogs and is curious about cats. We do not know how she does with children and she would probably do best in a home without small children, as she can be rambunctious when she is excited. She would do best in a home with other dogs as well as someone committed to training her as she definitely has that independent husky streak in her! She is eagerly waiting for her perfect forever family!

Delilah (ADOPTED!)

If you think this girl looks like an adorable, fluffy, handful…you would be absolutely correct! Delilah is a 5 month old, three-legged Siberian Husky that loves to get dirty in any mud or dirt she can find, or make for herself by digging! She is full of energy and a very active girl, so the couch potato lifestyle is NOT for her. Delilah will need a home that can provide her with DAILY exercise, and her new family should expect to be diligent with continuing basic and intermediate levels of training. This will help insure that Delilah will be the best Husky that she can be! In every single way, she is your typical Husky breed…food motivated, stubborn, aloof, independent, vocal, and VERY smart when she wants to be!

In addition to requiring an active lifestyle with consistent training, Delilah is looking for a home without cats or other small critters like chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, etc. Huskies come with a built in prey drive like no other! She will absolutely require a fenced yard so if you don’t have one or live in an apartment, Delilah is not the puppy for you. Delilah would also do best in a home with older children that can help be consistent with her training as needed, so if you have toddlers or children under the age of 13, Delilah is not the puppy for your family. If she is given an inch, she will take a whole mile without even thinking twice about it!

Delilah needed her right hind leg amputated due to a congenital defect called Osteochondrosis, and she was born blind in her left eye. Clearly it doesn’t slow her down one bit, but her potential family should know that she needs ointment in that eye, every day for the rest of her life. This medication is about $48 and last about 3 months. Her potential family should also know that grooming will be a regular expense for Delilah…her magical fibers end up on EVERYTHING!!

Delilah is current on vaccines and flea & tick preventative, and she will be spayed and microchipped prior to adoption. Crate training and house training is still a work in progress…that stubborn Husky trait can get the best of her, but she has more good days than bad!

Houlihan (ADOPTED!)

Houlihan is a tiny 9 month old special needs French Bulldog. She likes to spend her days tanning in the sun (when it’s not too hot!), or cuddled up with humans on the couch. When it’s time to get some exercise, she enjoys walks in her wheelchair and taking in all that life has to offer! Houlihan does well with all sizes of dogs and cats, but due to her special needs, she will do best in a home with only small dogs and no small children. She is spayed, microchipped, current on all of her vaccines and preventatives (flea/tick and dewormer), crate trained, and she is now looking for a very special forever home!

Houlihan is incontinent and paralyzed in her hind end due to a congenital defect in her spine called hemivertebrae, and she has a wedge-shaped vertebrae in her thoracic spine. This wedge-shaped vertebrae causes compression on her spine although she is not painful. Houlihan can not go potty on her own, and she has no control over when it happens, so she wears diapers or “drag bags” during the day. She has to be changed and cleaned several times throughout the day. At night she sleeps in her playpen, without diapers and Houlihan is quite accustomed to this routine.

At barely 12 pounds, her paralysis is easily managed by carrying her around and giving her time in her wheelchair for exercise. It will be important for Houlihan to remain lean and to not become overweight, as excess weight will be problem for her to carry around on her front legs. When she is not in her wheelchair, she can scoot around the house on her own and she will follow her human anywhere!

Houlihan is a brachycephalic (short nosed) breed so time in hot temperatures must be limited and exercise in her wheelchair should be in short sessions. She had surgery to repair her stenotic nares and soft palate, but it will still be important to make sure she does not over-heat or over exert herself.

Despite the congenital issues Houlihan has had since birth, she is a happy, sassy, cuddly puppy…living her best life on wheels! She has no idea she is different from any other dog! Houlihan is the sweetest little pup and she deserves to have her own loving family that can look beyond her special needs and welcome her into their hearts and home! hank (adoptED!)

Hank is a happy, affectionate, 3 year-old Dachshund & Chihuahua mix (maybe some Papillon in there too!) looking for a forever family to help him live his best life! He enjoys hanging out with his people on the couch, burrowing into a blanket, and he loves to go on walks in his wheelchair! This charming boy is super smart and will do anything you ask when rewarded with a treat!

Two months ago, Hank suffered a spinal injury that caused is hind legs to become paralyzed. Unfortunately, his family was not able to care for his needs long term so he was surrendered to Heath’s Haven. Surgery was not an option, but he is showing improvement with regular acupuncture sessions and daily physical therapy. He may never be able to walk on all four legs, voluntarily, but that doesn’t stop this little speed demon! He can scoot around the house gobbling up dropped crumbs with the best! HANK LOVES FOOD so it’s going to be very important for his forever family to keep him lean. Exercise and daily walks are important for Hank and will help keep that waistline trim.

Hank is incontinent and will need his bladder expressed 3-4 times per day. He does not know when he has to go potty so he can not be housetrained. As long as his bladder is expressed completely, he does not leak urine and does not need to wear a belly band. He does not need his bowels expressed and a regular, consistent diet and feeding schedule will help keep his eliminations easily managed. He is crated trained, and will sing a soft song in protest at bedtime until he gets his bed made and head burrowed in his pile of blankets.

Hank is current on vaccines and flea/tick preventative, neutered, microchipped, and ready to find that perfect family to love him unconditionally! He does great with dogs, cats, and children, but would prefer older children that can confidently pick him up and carry him if necessary. trip (adopted!)

Trip is a handsome, 4 year-old, tri-pod Maltese Poodle mix. This sweet boy loves to cuddle and he’ll happily keep your lap warm and toasty! Despite being a tri-pod this boy is healthy, active, and has no idea he is different than any other dog! One month ago, he fractured his remaining hind leg, and his previous owners elected for euthanasia as they could not afford the surgery to repair his fractured femur. Fortunately, he found his way to Heath’s Haven and got a second chance at life! He is now a bionic boy with a plate and screws in his leg, so it will be very important for his family to keep him safe from any further trauma to this hind leg.

Trip would do well in a home that understands how important it is to keep him lean, he only has 3 legs so being overweight is not in his best interest. Trip will need regular grooming so his family should be aware that this will be a necessary expense for the rest of his life. Trip is current on vaccines and flea & tick preventative, neutered, microchipped, house trained, and crate trained. He does well with other dogs, cats, children, and chickens although a home with smaller dogs and older children would be best. If you are interested in adopting Trip, please fill out an application!

Otis (adopted!)

Otis is a 10 month old Siberian Husky looking for a very special home to call his own! Despite his rough start to life, Otis is the most friendly, human-oriented husky you will ever meet! He greets every one he meets with kisses and a bubbly personality that will instantly win over your heart and soul! Humans have not always been kind to Otis, but he doesn’t hold grudges. Everyone is a friend! Dogs and children included! He is curious about cats, and when he is in his wheelchair it should be expected that he will chase out of sheer curiosity. Cats are new territory for him, and he is learning appropriate behavior, but huskies can be known to have a strong prey drive so he may do best in a home without felines.

Otis arrived at Heath’s Haven when he was 8 months old, unable to use his hind end due to multiple traumatic injuries sustained when he was just 4 months old. Upon his arrival, we learned that his pelvis had been broken in multiple places, and he had 3 fused vertebrae in his spine. These injuries were left untreated so he now uses a wheelchair to help him zoom around with all of that young, husky energy! His eyes light up with excitement when he sees his wheelchair, and it will go with him to his forever home! He is an active pup with lots of energy, so he is always ready for daily adventures in his wheelchair. Due to his injuries, Otis does not know when he needs to go potty, and he will need a home that can express his bladder 3-4 times day. Overnight, he wears a belly band to contain any leaks when he is fast asleep and completely relaxed. A regular, consistent diet and feeding schedule will help keep his fecal incontinence easily managed.

rEMINGTON (adopted!!)

Remington is a charming and goofy 3 year old Husky! He is full of personality and there is never a dull (or quiet!) moment when he is around! Some huskies could do with or without their humans, but Remington prefers to be around his people, soaking up all of the love like a fluffy sponge! When you meet Remington, you will find that he is full of life and his never-ending optimism is an absolute pleasure to be around! He is social and friendly with smaller dogs and cats! Yes…even cats!

This stunning, young boy experienced a spinal stroke (Fibrocartilaginous Embolism) 4 months ago and is now paralyzed in the hind end. Despite months of Acupuncture, Laser Therapy, and Hydrotherapy, Remington was not able to regain the use of his hind legs. But don’t tell him that! He now has a set of wheels, and he will run circles around you any day of the week! He loves to go on walks and explore all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Due to his hind end paralysis, Remington does not know when he has to go potty (he is incontinent). His incontinence is easily managed by expressing his bladder 3-4 times per day. As long as this is accomplished, he will not leak urine in between expressions and does not require a belly band. Remington is grateful for the help and will hold perfectly still for you! He scoots freely around the house during the day, and he is crate trained for sleeping at night.

Ray Ray (ADOPTED!!)

Ray Ray is a very special puppy, looking for a very special home! There’s a lot going on in this tiny little package of fur, mentally and physically so she is looking for a home that is very patient, loving, and dedicated to making sure she has the best life possible.

Ray Ray is a sassy 18 month old Shiba Inu and in true Shiba form…she is aloof, flippant, and dramatic! She was born with congenital defects in her hind legs so she can’t use them very well, but that doesn’t stop her from living her life! Sadly, orthopedic surgery was not an option for Ray and she will not use a wheelchair. She’s an independent girl that prefers to do things on her own terms! The way she gets around causes her to carry most of her body weight on her front end causing neck and shoulder tension/spasms. She is seen regularly for acupuncture and laser treatments to relieve this tension, and these treatments will need to be something her new family can provide for her on a regular basis. Pain management will always be a top priority when it comes to Ray Ray living her best life!

Ray Ray has some visual impairment and she only sees large movements within a close range. She has congenital issues with her jaw that make it hard for her to chew on large kibble or treats, so canned food (or soaked small bite kibble) prevents her from choking on her food. She gets really excited when it comes to food so she tries to eat too quickly! Along with this special food preparation, Ray is on three prescription medications and multiple supplements that are very important for her physical & mental well-being. She will need to be on these medications and supplements for the rest of her life. This is an expense that her new family should anticipate along with the regular laser and acupuncture treatments.

Ray Ray does well with other dogs and cats, but she does not interact or play with them. She would do best in a home without children as she is hypersensitive to touch around her face. She is not an aggressive girl, but she doesn’t quite know how to handle affection from humans. She is still learning that not all humans are bad humans. We have no idea what this girl has been through prior to arriving at our rescue, but we are dedicated to making sure she only experiences love and positive experiences from this point on.

We are still working on house-training with Ray, and due to her decreased cognitive function, we don’t know if/when it will “click” for her. She does well when she is taken outside regularly and typically sleeps overnight without accidents. She is crate trained (play pen at bedtime and when she is unsupervised), spayed, microchipped, current on vaccines, as well as dewormer/flea & tick preventative.

Twylah (ADOPTed)

Twylah is a 12 week old, special needs, Labrador Retriever looking for a BEYOND high energy home! She will need obedience training (a requirement to adopt) and a very active lifestyle for all of her years to come! She is a social butterfly and will happily cover all strangers with kisses until she has them wrapped around her large puppy paws! Twylah loves all dogs and cats, and does well with children! Older children in her home would be best, as she is exuberant and easily excitable...and still working on her appropriate puppy manners!

Twylah was born with Megaesophagus (her esophagus becomes abnormally enlarged when eating and has a hard time moving food from her throat to her stomach) and will require a special diet, medication, and a Bailey Chair for meal times, for the rest of her life. Despite these special requirements, she is a happy, healthy, puppy and can live a long and normal life span, just like any other Labrador!

Twylah needs to sit in her Bailey Chair (provided by our rescue) while she is eating and for 20-30 minutes after eating. She has adjusted well to this regimen. Her medication helps keep the sphincter to her stomach working properly so she does not regurgitate her food. Her diet consists of Steve's Raw Frozen patties that are thawed and fed to her slowly at least three times per day. As she gets older, her meals can be adjusted to the standard two meals a day, but it will always be important to make sure any regurgitation is controlled (currently non-existent) so she gets the appropriate nutrients that a growing puppy needs. Her forever family should be prepared to allow extra time at each meal time to ensure her food successfully enters her stomach for digestion...and stays there!

Twylah is crate trained, house training is still a work in progress, she is current on vaccines/dewormer/flea & tick preventative, and will be spayed and microchipped prior to her adoption (once she is old enough). bruce wayne (ADOPTED!)

Bruce is a 1 year old Boston Terrier with a dashing and charming personality! He is an active and high energy puppy that loves to go on walks, wrestle with his friends, and he truly enjoys meeting as many people as he possibly can! When he’s taking a break from all of his socializing, you will find him napping in his favorite bed or cuddled up in a warm soft blanket while chewing on a bully stick!

Bruce had a pretty tough start to life, but he has no idea he is different from any other dog! Bruce came to Heath’s Haven from another rescue that deemed him “unadoptable,” due to being incontinent, and he was sadly facing euthanasia. Fortunately, they reached out to Heath’s Haven as his last hope! When he arrived at Heath’s Haven, he was immediately scheduled with the Neurology Department at The Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for an MRI to diagnose the cause of his incontinence.

Bruce was born with a congenital defect called Spina Bifida. This is a rare congenital abnormality in the vertebrae of the spine that occurs in the embryotic stage of development during gestation. In Bruce’s case, the vertebrae in the sacral area of his spine did not completely develop/fuse around the spinal cord. They also found that he had a condition called Syringomyelia. His spinal cord was full of fluid from his neck all the way down to his little cork-screw tail. Bruce has been prescribed medications to help his body absorb the extra fluid and decrease any inflammation. In addition to the Spina Bifida and Syringomyelia, the Neurologist ALSO found that Bruce had “Tethered Cord Syndrome.” The tissues that surround his spinal cord (meninges) have fused to his saccrum causing his spinal cord to stretch as he grows. Fortunately, he is now full grown and has not shown any symptoms warranting surgery!

Bruce will always be incontinent (not able to control his bladder or bowels), and he has an underdeveloped and small bladder that can not be expressed. This is easily managed with diapers and/or belly bands that he doesn’t mind wearing at all! He takes daily urinary/bladder supplements that can be purchased at a local pet store or on Amazon. Bruce takes Omeprazole daily to reduce fluid build-up in his spinal cord and he will need to be on this medication for the rest of his life. He currently loves the watermelon flavored liquid drizzled on his food twice a day!

We are currently accepting applications for Bruce and hope to find an adopter with experience in managing the care of a Spina Bifida dog, but experience is not required. We have been caring for incontinent dogs for the past 10 years and will provide his new family with all of the tips and tricks to care for a “diaper dog.”

Portia (ADOPTed)

Portia is a sweet, loving, goofy 14 month old Lab Mix puppy! She adores everyone she meets and is looking for a family to call her own!

Patrick (ADOPTED)

Patrick is a 14 month old Lab Mix puppy looking for his forever home! He is an enthusiastic little guy that befriends everyone he sees and loves to meet new furry friends and does well with all dogs and cats! Patrick is curious, cuddly, and a social butterfly!

Patrick came to Heath's Haven from a shelter in Arkansas. He was born with a neurological condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) and this effects his balance, coordination, and depth perception. He has an adorable wiggle and bounce to his walk, but he doesn't know he is different! Dogs with CH can long, healthy, normal lives just like any other dog, but loud noises and sudden movements can be little scary so he is looking for a home without small children. Patrick is bonded with Portia and they will need to be adopted together and stay local to the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area.

Patrick is neutered, current on vaccines/flea & tick preventative/deworming, microchipped, crate trained, and house trained!

Molly (ADOPted!)

Cashay (ADOPTED!)

Cashay is approximately 7 years old and weighs 10 pounds. She loves being around people and enjoys being the center of attention! She does great with other dogs or she could do without... she has no preference. If you are looking for a dog with that perfect balance between "Netflix and chill" and an adventure dog, Cashay is your girl! She is an active girl that enjoys (and needs) exercise to keep her muscles strong and her figure slim, but napping is one of her favorite hobbies! Talking is not one of her strong suits (she's not a yapper), but she will alert you to noises/people outside of the home. She won't be able to greet you with tail wags when you get home, as her tail is broken, but I promise she will greet you with a smile and happy, dancing feet!

Cashay is special needs, as she had a spinal injury 6 months ago. She regained the use of her hind end, but she remains incontinent. She is not able to be house trained or go potty on her own, so she will need a dedicated guardian that will express her bladder three times per day. She is also on two medications twice a day that help make the expressing process successful for her and her guardian. These medications run about $75 per month and are a permanent necessity, meaning she will need them forever.

Cashay is great with other dogs and cats, but no small children please as she has a history of a spinal injury. She is spayed, current on vaccines/deworming/flea & tick preventative, fecal parasite negative, and crate trained.

Lola (ADOPTed!)

Lola is a sweet little girl we rescued from a shelter in New Mexico in February. She was diagnosed with “Bilateral Carpal Instability” in both front legs. Her carpal ligaments were tightly contracted and causing her to walk on the top of her toes rather than her pads. We immediately took her to The Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to see the Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Specialists. Not only were her carpal ligaments tightly contracted, but her left elbow was fused in place and not able to bend. To prevent damage to her wrists she had surgery to place plates and pins in her legs to fuse her wrists (Arthrodesis) to keep them stable and in a permanent position. She went through an extensive rehab program with the Rehabilitation Specialist at WSU and her progress was slow but her mobility improved greatly.

Lola is still under our care and doing rehab here at Heath’s Haven until she is cleared by her specialists to go to her forever home, but we are accepting applications in hopes to have her forever family all line up when she’s ready. Lola is an amazing girl that enjoys the outdoors, but is also content with being inside on the couch with her humans. She is not a high energy girl and she would be a great fit for a single senior or couple looking for a loving companion! She will need regular grooming every 8-10 weeks so her potential adopter should expect this expense when considering adoption.
